Face of Unity is a wood-carved replica of We Two Together, a piece by Michael Alfano. Carl Gordon faithfully recreates the original design, where two nude figures embrace to form the shape of a face; arms creating the brow, torsos becoming the cheeks, and clasped hands forming the forehead and base for the eyes and nose.
Carved from warm, richly grained mahogany wood, Gordon’s version brings the design into a new medium and setting. While not an original composition, the piece is a skillful handcrafted replica that reflects Gordon’s talent in traditional woodcarving.
The design is inspired by a line from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass:
“Shine! shine! shine! Pour down your warmth, great sun! While we bask, we two together.”
